In every sense of the term, promote yourself.
Make contributions that get recognized, don’t shy away from the hard work, and help others do their job better. Take on extra tasks that need to get done, without the promise of reward. If you want to be recognized for your skills, find ways to demonstrate them. If everybody realizes that you are already doing the work required by a higher position, it just makes sense to change your title. That’s a lot easier for management than tossing someone into a totally new role.
